Today we had our rehearsal for next weeks UStream program broadcast for our assessment, which will take place on the 18th January. With our group going first, scheduled at a 1pm start, we assembled all of our paperwork in the morning, in order to decide upon a proper way to shoot our program. We went off on our briefly in the group to ensure everything had been done and everything needed for the shoot was in order. The roles in our group were as follows:
1. Director - Josh Lloyd
2. Vision Mixer - Luis Winder
3. Producer - Joe Kerrigan
4. Floor Manager - Jack Ware
As I am acting as the vision mixer for our group, I had to make sure that the VT we made as part of our work with Dave was ready to be implemented into the tricaster. With a copy saved I began trying to load it in via USB from my hard drive, which proved to be harder than I expected, eventually we had to add our VT in through the public Lacie server, then accessed from the Tricaster itself so it could be loaded in. With that done, we were more or less ready to begin the shoot, with our cast growing ever more restless, we decided to do a shoot, with some aspects running smoothly, and some not so much. However, the day did prove to be quite important as it showed us that we were still not totally prepared, letting us discover what needs to be done before next week.

Individual Idea Pitch
Our news package will revolve around student accommodation; looking into why the Manchester College doesn’t provide accommodation for its students as a standard, the same way in which almost every other higher education outlet in Manchester does, and the lack of help or advice from the college in aiding students to find private accommodation elsewhere. We hope that through our research, we will be able to present a news package that is well rounded, in-depth and evenly balanced, that we can then incorporate into our UStream program to serve towards igniting an interesting and healthy debate. We also hope that through providing this information to students at the college, along with students throughout Manchester, we can make more people aware of the issue at hand, and in the process, maybe even change the accommodation problem at the college itself.
We will research a range of information and statistics; including numbers of attendees going to all Manchester College campuses who are living away from home and students that had to stay at home who would of liked to move into accommodation. We will conduct interviews with people attending the college, who have been directly affected by the issue - in some cases students in our own class - and we will try to gain an interview with someone who works at the college such as the finance counsellor, and finally we hope to gain an interview with someone from an external private hall; e.g. a student welfare officer, all of this serving as our primary research for the assignment.

The secondary sources we will use to bolster our package will come from a number of places; such as the college website, private accommodation websites, magazines giving listings on available accommodation and accommodation that is available to students of certain Colleges and Universities, but have restrictions on students at the Manchester College, also from a wide range of other news packages on UStream and YouTube.
In order to create the news package, we intend to film our interviewees at their respective places of residence or work, so for students at the college, we hope to obtain and complete all of the paperwork necessary to film at his/her private halls of residence, as for the staff at college we aim to film the interview at their desk, then the same with the staff at the private halls, hopefully providing a sense of realism and some variety to the package. We will then hope to gain some GV's from in and around the college, the private halls and then around Manchester itself, focussing mainly on student orientated areas, finishing the whole program with a timelapsed film of Media City as a backdrop.

Online News Package Research
Throughout my research, I have been looking at other news packages on YouTube and UStream etc, they have provided me with vital information in order to eventually create my own package for our program. I have been able to more accurately determine what elements of any news package we create will attract certain target audiences, and what may turn certain people away from it, such as the presenting styles and the type of guests, right down to the colour scheme and the theme music.
One channel I have found very interesting, and pivotal to my research, is the now infamous SBTV, the UK's leading online youth broadcaster. Despite this broadcaster focussing mainly on music, looking at the way in which the show is presented and then marketed to the public has been integral to my research, especially in determining our target audience, another thing to gain from looking into this channel is their interview style, which we may integrate elements of into our News Package if possible. Here is a clip from this channel, which gives a general overview of what they do and a good look at their interview techniques:

I believe this video will prove to important to the group, and as research it has shown - albeit this one is with a celebrity - on a personal level, a good way to relate to your guest, how to make them feel at home, and how to get the best out of the interview. On a more technical level, the interview shows good points to integrate GV's, noddy shots etc and a good way to set up a backdrop. The way in which this channel has been able to totally relate to its desired target audience, it is an impressively successful channel created by people who are the same age as their target audience, which is more or less the situation our group. If we can find a way to channel the elements that has allowed SBTV the ability to do this, our show and news package should be a success.

News Package Research - Content
For the news package, we have said from the beginning as a group that we will adhere to make the VT look as professional as possible, with the means we have at our disposal. We have decided that the style of the package will be minimalistic, with a continous and matching colour scheme that is the same from beginning to end, from the design of the lower thirds in the interview, to the colour of the sofa in the program itself.
Our logo will be simple, yet effective, the name of the show is 'Good Morning Manchester', so a simple but bold and striking 'GMM' lettering done in a thick black font inside a shape with the same colour as the scheme we will be using, similar to that of the New York Times' logo:
Finally, we hope to be able to either use a green screen as our backdrop, projecting a time lapse of Media City looking over the water there. Alternatively, if a green screen isn't possible we will hope to use a large flatscreen television on-set, where one of the presenters can stand and read the days top stories a long with pictures, and also that can have our time lapse on, behind our logo.

Green Screen
Today we were working with green screen, Ricardo introduced us to the background of them in the industry, why, how and when they are used generally, then we had a chance to take turns filming each other with the aid of them. We found out that a special lens attachment is used to create the effect, as opposed to having literally a 'green screen' behind the subject, this attachment emits a green light from LED bulbs that attaches itself to the subject, pending on how high or low you have the settings, and depending on whether or not the subject has bright green clothing on, which makes it harder to determine where the effect can be placed.
Once we had done the filming in small groups, we were able to then take it to the computers and manipulate it with any background image or video we saw fit to use, which had varying degrees of success and hilarity. I shot three different takes of my subject, each with a varying degree of intensity, ranging from -4 to +4, each meaning different things had to be done in the edit in order to make the image visually pleasing, when it is over exposed it is harder to feather out the intense green colour that surrounds the subject, whereas when it is under exposed it is difficult to achieve the effect without the subject looking like a ghost, therefore a middle ground had to be found whilst filming and then eventually editing.
